Magical Companion: Nanao’s magical companion Akane is a winged flamecat. Flamecats appear similar to Maine Coone cats in shape and coat length, though they are a little larger. Their coloring, however, is different. Their fur is sooty grey and cream, with the color distribution being similar to that of any cat with a light belly and a dark back. There are darker, flame-like markings on the grey portion of the cat, and the tips of the snout, ears, and tail are black, as if scorched. They have eyes that look like liquid copper. Many peopl assume that flamecats are normal cats because their wings are usually invisible, only becoming visible when the cat is actively using them. Akane is of average size for a female of her species.

Flamecats have excellent control of their body temperature, raising it at will. Their normal body temperature is that of any cat, but when distressed, they can easily raise it high enough that a touch of its paw or a brush of its flank causes cloth, paper, wood, or anything else easily flammable to spontaneously combust. It is, understandably, nearly impossible to set the flamecat itself aflame, requiring temperatures that would vaporize solid rock. They also have glands in their paws that produce a napalm-like substance that the flamecat can, at will, release through its claws, making its scratch a potentially deadly attack. Akane has a temperament similar to that of an average house cat. She is extremely devoted to Nanao, sometimes twining around her legs like a hyperactive kitten, and would never harm her. Around strangers, however, she can be quite surly, and is a extremely solitary creature. She can commonly be found sleeping and stalking birds in the cemetery or near the shrine when there are no classes there, because of the low likelihood of being bothered by other people’s magical companions. Her element is, of course, fire.

Magical Conductor In all forms, Nanao can channel magic through her fan whether it is open or closed.

Basic- Nanao’s conductor takes the shape of a simple folding fan about ten inches long, well worn and obviously used. Nanao has had this fan for years, she has only recently begun using it to channel magic. It is made of black lacquered wooden slats with a narrow band of paper at the outside edge keeping the slats together. When Nanao is channeling magic through it, it glows a vivid blue-violet, almost ultraviolet.
Risen- The conductor takes on the appearance of a delicate dancing fan, with few fins, each about two inches longer than they were in the basic form. The main body of the fan is instead made up of silk, which extends in a flutter of cloth beyond the ends of the ribs (like these fans -> http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~whren/FD4.jpg ). The silk fades from white at the base to true violet out near the edge. When in this form, the fan amplifies Nanao’s energy a little bit, be it magical or physical. She can cast spells with a stronger amount of energy, and her physical blows fall heavier than they would were her fan not in risen form. She can also use the fan when it is open to send diffuse waves of elemental energy at an opponent. These waves are not by far concentrated enough to be invincible, they can be easily blocked provided the one on the receiving end finds appropriate cover or knows the right defensive spells. When Nanao is channeling magic in this form, the conductor glows the same violet color as the cloth.
Divine- The conductor takes the form of a metal fan for fighting with, though dissimilar to a Japanese tessen. Like the other forms, this is a folding fan, this time about fourteen inches long. The ribs are made of thin sheets of steel, which, when open, form a solid-looking semi-circle. They are connected with a narrow ribbon near the edge. Both sides of the fan are intricately engraved with Japanese-style decorations. The edge of the fan is razor sharp and, aside from being usable as a magical conductor, it can also be used as a shield or a weapon. The powers it has are similar to those of the risen form. It lends Nanao strength, although in much greater amounts than the risen form. Instead of sending diffuse waves of elemental energy, it sends concentrated beams, (were it used to channel fire, for example, it would send a fireball). When being used in this form, it glows a fierce, deep plum color.

Personality: Nanao has what would be considered a relatively small build in most of the world, though for a Japanese woman she is actually on the tall side of average. She has a petite figure, blue eyes (which are usually hidden behind a pair of black wire-frame glasses), and black hair reaching the bottom of her shoulder blades. She wears her hair pulled back in a bun with the ends sticking out the top and a lock falling over the extreme right side of her face (though not hiding any part of her eye), opposite her part. Most people assume that she wears her hair this way because it is practical, but in truth she adopted this fashion because she feels that she looks younger than her age when she wears it down.

Nanao has a serious and mature nature, which, combined with her introverted personality, has caused many people to think her cold and unfeeling, though her close friends know that she is in fact fairly friendly, provided you are not a complete and total idiot. She would much rather spend her spare time reading a book than going out drinking with a large group. Indeed, she is rarely seen without a book, whether it be textbook, historical tome, or novel. She is usually practical and, while her space may be a little on the cluttered side, is very organized and knows exactly where to find whatever she happens to need at the moment. She is highly intelligent and excels in almost anything she puts her mind to. Nanao is adamant about completing work on time (whether it is her own work or she is pestering someone else to do theirs), and always puts her full effort into anything she does. She enjoys learning and is fascinated by history and information about other cultures.

Nanao has strong opinions and, if she does not necessarily voice them incessantly, is extremely loyal to her causes. She almost always respects authority, but it is more because she has better things to do than be getting in trouble than because “breaking the rules is bad.” (In a similar vein, she seldom drinks and never smokes because she has better uses for her time than getting drunk or high). When she does go against authority, she always has a good reason for it. She is polite most of the time and, when she isn’t, is more likely to be sarcastic than mean; that is, if she feels the need to do more than glare at all.

Nanao is generally cool tempered and non-confrontational, but those unfortunate few who have sparked her ire know that she is in fact a formidable foe, and not to be trifled with. She does not deal well with patronizing comments or being taken lightly, and is fiercely independent, willing to do whatever she has to in order to protect what she holds dear. She is particularly irritated by perverted comments and teasing from men, even when said teasing has only the faintest hint of perversion. She typically responds to such incidents with a whack across the face with a folding fan or a book, whichever happens to be nearest to hand. Those men who are out of arms reach usually receive a death glare, though she has on occasion been known to throw small objects as well, with alarmingly precise aim.

Fighting skills:
Magical Strength Shinigami-Nanao has a great amount of latent magical talent. She doesn't currently have the necessary training to refine her attacks into specific spells, but she has figured out how to cast raw energy on her own.
Energy Reserve Lesser Shinigami-Intentionally using blasts of raw energy as opposed to refined spells takes more out of a person's energy reserves because of the smaller amount of control involved, but Nanao is still able to to this several times before tiring.
Agility Talented Human/Lesser Shinigami-Nanao is better at dodging out of the way than she is at taking hits. Still, it's not her best attribute.
Vitality Awakened Human/Talented Human-Nanao is a mage type, not a fighter type. She can't take a lot of hits, so it's better for her to fight from the back using ranged spells.
Brute Strength Average human-Nanao prefers to spend her time reading rather than spend it in physical training. She's not out of shape, but neither is she an athlete.
